The Padma awards were announced on Thursday evening on the eve of Republic Day. The nation has honored such unsung heroes who have excelled in their fields, who are inspirations for common people and whose life stories can give positive messages to the people. 34 heroes have been included in this list. These include names like Parvati Barua (first female mahout), Jageshwar Yadav (tribal activist), Chami Murmu (tribal environmentalist and women empowerment).

Parbati Barua: The first female mahout
Parbati Barua of Assam is 67 years old. He has been awarded Padmashree in the field of social work (animal welfare). Parbati, India’s first female mahout, defied orthodoxy to carve out a niche for herself in a traditionally male-dominated field, and remained committed to it. He helped state governments deal with the crisis of conflict between humans and elephants, and his scientific methods were also effective in how to capture wild elephants and deal with their problem.

Parbati inherited this skill from her father and started it at the very young age of 14. He has devoted more than 4 decades to this work and has played an important role in saving the lives of many people from elephants. Despite coming from an affluent background, he chose this as his goal. Leading a simple life and a life dedicated to serving the people became his goal.

Jageshwar Yadav: Brother of Birhor
Tribal welfare worker Jageshwar Yadav from Jashpur has also been selected for Padmashree. Jageshwar Yadav of Chhattisgarh is 67 years old. He is being honored with the Padma Award for social work (Tribal – PVTG). He dedicated his life for the upliftment of the marginalized Birhor and Pahari Korwa people.

Established an ashram and camps in Jashpur and worked to eliminate illiteracy and improve standard health care. During the pandemic, he removed hesitation and provided vaccination facilities, which also helped in reducing infant mortality rate. Despite financial constraints, his passion remained for bringing social change.
