Indore News: Indore (Naiduniya representative). We have to accept environment as a religion. We all have to make joint efforts to protect the environment. Efforts will have to be made to preserve and renovate rivers, wells and stepwells. The stepwells were developed in such a way that they would maintain the ground water level. Apart from this, the stepwells also used to control the local weather. According to the geographical situation, the ground water in Indore is very low. In such a situation, the importance of stepwells increases a lot here. It is very important to save them. I hope the district administration will work to preserve the stepwells. Industries are also necessary, but cannot compromise on the environment.

This was stated by Dr. Afroz Ahmed, member of the Principal Bench of the National Green Tribunal, New Delhi. He was addressing a joint meeting of the departments related to environmental protection at the collector’s office on Friday. Collector Dr. Ilaiah Raja T, Corporation Commissioner Harshika Singh, Divisional Forest Officer Narendra Pandwa, Additional Police Commissioner Rajesh Hingankar etc. were present in the meeting. In the meeting, Dr. Ahmed inquired about the works done and ongoing works, air quality, solid waste management, bio-waste management, bio-medical waste management, e-waste management, air quality management etc.

Industries should run, but not on the condition of pollution

Dr. Ahmed said that the ground water is deep in Indore. It is our responsibility to save it. Where there is no surface water, we cannot say that we will not use ground water. Industries are also necessary for development, but it is our job to ensure standards for them. Companies should also follow ethics. District Administration, Municipal Corporation, Police should jointly see that industries run, but not on the condition of pollution.

It is our responsibility to save the ponds

Dr. Ahmed said that ponds have a catchment area from where water comes into the pond. It is our responsibility to save the life of the ponds. If there are illegal constructions in this house, then remove it. The administration should demark the ponds and monitor that there is no encroachment.

Appreciation of work being done in Indore

Dr. Ahmed praised the work being done in Indore towards saving the environment. He said that cloth bags should be encouraged. It should be monitored whether permission has been taken to use ground water in educational institutions, hospitals, real estate sector or not. An SOP should be made regarding ground water conservation. Today we are completely dependent on the water of big rivers. Now we should pay special attention to small and local water structures.

Green belt should be compulsorily in new colonies

Dr. Ahmed said that green belt should be compulsorily developed in new colonies. The use, purchase, sale and storage of banned harmful pesticides should be banned. Similarly attention should also be given to other uses of stubble. In the meeting, Collector Dr. Ilaiah Raja T and Municipal Commissioner Harshika Singh informed about the work being done in Indore for environment protection and following the instructions of NGT.
