Before the Lok Sabha elections, former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa merged his Shiromani Akali Dal (United) with the Shiromani Akali Dal led by Sukhbir Singh Badal. Speaking to reporters, Dhindsa described the merger as a “joint responsibility to bring Punjab back on track”, while Sukhbir Badal called it a merger of two families.

Sukhbir Badal said that this is a historic day, we are not just standing with the sect but also for the issues. He said that it has to be seen how the national parties have behaved with the border state of Punjab. He said that we have fought for the country. SAD has got many works done for Punjab. Prakash Singh Badal served his entire life for the country.

Taking aim at the Mann government of Punjab, Badal said that Bhagwant Mann is the most incompetent Chief Minister ever. They should watch Prakash Singh Badal’s videos to learn on the protocol. He said that Akali Dal is the party which has given basic infrastructure to Punjab. Sukhdev Dhindsa has worked with my father. Due to some reasons he became separated from us. Dhindsa and his family have made a huge contribution to the party (Akali Dal).

Dhindsa was expelled from SAD 4 years ago

Let us inform that Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, his son and former Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa were expelled from SAD in February 2020 for alleged anti-party activities, after which they formed SAD (United). Talks for the merger began in December last year, when Badal apologized for the sacrilege incidents that took place during the Akali rule in 2015. Then he had appealed to the disgruntled Akali leaders to forget their differences and come under one flag. At the same time, SAD (United) had contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections in alliance with BJP.

‘Need to strengthen SAD’

After the merger, Dhindsa said that there was a strong feeling among our leaders and workers to merge with Shiromani Akali Dal to bring unity in the ‘Panth’. The entire party feels that Sukhbir Singh Badal has expressed heartfelt regret over the sacrilege cases that took place in 2015. He said that I called a meeting of the district presidents of the party yesterday and they gave the green signal to the merger. Dhindsa said that the demand of the present times is that SAD should be strengthened, which will strengthen the ‘Panth’. Sukhbir Singh Badal is like my son.

Dhindsa told- how the merger was discussed

Dhindsa said that today you are seeing the situation in Punjab, the law and order situation, it is our responsibility to raise our voice collectively. Dhindsa said that the day Sukhbir Badal apologized in front of Akal Takht, we formed a 5-member committee and took feedback from people across Punjab and the majority suggested that we should unite, I spoke to senior leaders of my party and they Authorized that whatever decision I take will be acceptable.
