Before the Lok Sabha elections, former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa merged his Shiromani Akali Dal (United) with the Shiromani Akali Dal led by Sukhbir Singh Badal. Speaking to reporters, Dhindsa described the merger as a “joint responsibility to bring Punjab back on track”, while Sukhbir Badal called it a merger of two families.
Sukhbir Badal said that this is a historic day, we are not just standing with the sect but also for the issues. Dhindsa was expelled from SAD 4 years ago
Let us inform that Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, his son and former Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa were expelled from SAD in February 2020 for alleged anti-party activities, after which they formed SAD (United). Talks for the merger began in December last year, when Badal apologized for the sacrilege incidents that took place during the Akali rule in 2015. Then he had appealed to the disgruntled Akali leaders to forget their differences and come under one flag. At the same time, SAD (United) had contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections in alliance with BJP.

After the merger, Dhindsa said that there was a strong feeling among our leaders and workers to merge with Shiromani Akali Dal to bring unity in the ‘Panth’. The entire party feels that Sukhbir Singh Badal has expressed heartfelt regret over the sacrilege cases that took place in 2015.
