Batting great Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday said playing in the Ranji Trophy gives the national players an opportunity to get back to their basics while raising the level of the domestic tournament. BCCI has recently made it mandatory for its centrally contracted players to play domestic red ball cricket. If a centrally contracted player is not in the national team or NCA and a domestic tournament is going on at that time, then he will have to play that tournament. BCCI had dropped Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the central contract list for not playing their state’s Ranji Trophy matches. He said, ‘When Indian players play for their home teams, it raises the playing level of the youth and many times new talent is identified.’

Sachin Tendulkar wrote on ‘X’, ‘This sometimes gives the national players a chance to rediscover the basics. Throughout my career I have been passionate about playing for Mumbai whenever I got a chance. There were about seven-eight Indian players in our dressing room who had played Ranji with me and it was a fun experience to play with them.

Sachin wrote, ‘When Indian players play for their home teams, it increases the quality of youth play and sometimes new talent is identified. It also gives the national players an opportunity to sometimes rediscover the fundamentals. Kishan, 25, left the South Africa tour in December and returned home due to personal reasons, but did not play for Jharkhand during the team’s entire Ranji Trophy campaign. Instead he focused on IPL preparations for his franchise Mumbai Indians. This had angered the BCCI.

On the other hand, Shreyas was dropped from the Indian team after poor performance in two test matches against England. Iyer was not available for Mumbai’s Ranji quarter-final against Baroda. He cited injury as the reason behind this. However, NCA later revealed that Shreyas has no injuries and is completely fit. After this, Shreyas was also seen in the camp of Kolkata Knight Riders. In such a situation, BCCI took strict action against both. However, he played Mumbai’s Ranji semi-final against Tamil Nadu.

Tendulkar believes that with star Indian players playing in their state teams, people’s interest in domestic tournaments will also increase. He said, ‘Top level players will participate in domestic tournaments and in such a situation fans will also start following their home teams and start supporting them. It is good to see that BCCI gives equal priority to domestic cricket. Mumbai has qualified for its 48th Ranji Trophy final. The 41-time champions will face Vidarbha in the final. This match will be played from March 10.
