On an average, every person wastes 79 kg of food in a year.
More than 1 billion tons of grain is wasted annually worldwide.
– Whereas, about 80 crore people in the world still sleep hungry.

These three figures are shocking. And this shows that while on one hand people are not getting enough food to fill their stomach, on the other hand so much food is being wasted every year.

All this information has come out in the ‘Food Waste Index Report 2024’ of the United Nations. In this, data of 2022 has been taken. It has been told that in 2022, 1.05 billion tonnes of grain was wasted worldwide.

It has been told in the report that food wastage is not limited only to rich or big countries. In fact, almost the same amount of waste is taking place in small and poor countries also. However, food wastage is less in villages as compared to cities. One reason for this is that there are more pets in villages than in cities and food is distributed among them. For this reason, food is not wasted as much in villages as compared to cities.

5 big things of the report…

– 19 percent food was wasted: In 2022, 1.05 billion tonnes of food was wasted in a year. That is, out of the food that was available to the people, 19 percent was wasted. According to this, food worth 1 trillion dollars i.e. about Rs 84 lakh crore was wasted in a year.

– More wastage in families: Most of the food wastage is in families. 631 million tonnes or 60 percent of the food was wasted within the families themselves. 29 crore tonnes of food was wasted in the food service sector and 13 crore tonnes in the retail sector.

-Each person wasted 79 kg of food: In 2022, on average, every person across the world will waste 79 kg of food. In comparison to rich countries, food wastage was reduced by only 7 kg in poor countries.

– Impact of food wastage on climate: Due to food wastage, greenhouse gas emissions have increased by 8 to 10 percent. The report has revealed that in countries whose climate is hot, food wastage is much more than in cold countries.

How much food do Indians waste?

The United Nations report states that every Indian wastes an average of 55 kg of food every year. According to this, more than 7.81 crore tonnes of food grains are wasted annually in Indian families.

According to the report, China has the highest wastage of food among India’s neighboring countries. Every person in China wastes an average of 76 kg of food in a year. According to this, 10.86 crore tonnes of food is wasted in families there in a year.

Although in Pakistan, every person wastes an average of 130 kg of food annually, but there 3.07 crore tonnes of food is wasted in a year.

What is the solution to this problem?

Every person around the world wastes an average of 79 kg of food in a year. If this food is not wasted, it can fill the stomach of a needy person.

However, in many countries, work is being done on ways to reduce food wastage. Food wastage has decreased in some countries including Britain, Australia, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa. Since 2007, food waste in Japan has decreased by one third. Whereas, in Britain it has decreased by 18 percent.

Lisa Moon, CEO of the Global Foodbanking Network, told ‘The Guardian’ that we can work together with food banks to reduce food wastage.

He told that food banking is a unique model to reduce food wastage. Because food banks not only work closely with manufacturers, farmers, retailers and the food service sector, but they also ensure that this food reaches those in need.

Not only this, some studies have also revealed that if people are asked to collect food waste separately, their habits improve and they waste less food. Because this makes them understand how much of what they buy or make is being wasted.
