The registration of these buses has also not been canceled by the school management. Now the transport department has issued a notice to the operators of 312 school buses to collect the outstanding road tax of five crores, giving them time till June 30 to deposit the outstanding tax. Citing the Act, a warning has also been given not to use them as school buses. A warning has been given to seize buses as well as other movable and immovable properties under the Land Revenue Code for non-payment of taxes within the prescribed period. The department has also advised educational institutions to operate these buses as passenger buses.

Transport Department officials said that 312 bus owners and school management who have not deposited the outstanding road tax of more than five crores have been asked to register their presence in the Raipur RTO office by June 30 with all the necessary documents after the notice is served. Even after this, unilateral action will be taken against the bus owners who do not come to the office, holding them guilty of tax evasion.

Tax not deposited for five years

Road tax of 312 buses running in schools has not been deposited for three to five years. On an average, each bus has an outstanding of Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 2.50 lakh. After calculating all these, each bus owner and school management Strict instructions have been given to deposit the tax. If the tax is not deposited by June 30, action will be taken to seize the buses.

Operation of school bus only for 12 years

Under the Central Motor Vehicles Act, buses are allowed to be operated in school only up to 12 years. After that it can be used in passenger buses and other private use. Whereas passenger buses are allowed to operate up to a maximum of 15 years. After conducting fitness check and looking at the condition of the vehicle, permission is given up to two years under special circumstances. According to the officials, it is mandatory to obtain a permit to operate passenger buses, without which there is a provision of fine for operating.
