Now there is no need to give a separate entrance exam for admission to PhD in IIT, IIM or any other university. University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to recognize UGC NET Score for PhD Admission. UGC said in a notice issued on Wednesday that now instead of entrance examinations conducted by various universities/HEIs, students can apply for admission to PhD degree courses through NET score.
One PhD entrance exam formula will be implemented
Actually, UGC NET exam is conducted twice a year in June and December. Till now UGC NET score is used only for recruitment of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor after Master’s degree. Many universities conduct different entrance exams for PhD admission. Students had to appear for the PhD entrance exam of these universities, but for the convenience of the students, UGC has decided to implement one entrance exam (NET score) formula for PhD admission. This decision has been taken by the Expert Committee in view of the National Education Policy 2020.
Candidates will be declared eligible in three categories
In the 578th Experts Meeting held on March 13, 2024, UGC decided that NET score will be used for PhD admission in various universities or other higher institutions from the academic session 2024-25. NET candidates will be declared qualified in three categories.
Category 1: Eligible candidates for PhD admission with JRF and recruitment of Assistant Professor.
Category 2: Candidates eligible for PhDA admission and recruitment of Assistant Professor without JRF.
Category 3: Only candidates eligible for PhD admission. There will be no eligibility for JRF or Assistant Professor recruitment.
Along with good college, avenues for good scholarship will also open.
Academician Amit Niranjan, resident of Kidwai Nagar, Kanpur, has given his opinion on the recognition of UGC NET score for PhD admission. He considered this decision as a big step in the interest of the students. He says that this exam (UGC NET) will not only become a medium for you to get admission in a good college or university on the basis of your marks, but you can also get a scholarship worth lakhs of rupees.

They believe that under this new scheme, your UGC NET score will be important for your future career. NET score can be used for admission into premier institutes of higher education like IIT, IIM and other top name colleges. By getting more marks, you can also get jobs directly in universities and colleges. Moreover, now you will not need to appear in separate examinations for admission to PhD degree of any university.

Never before had the marks of this examination been given so much importance. This is an important step which will inspire students to think about their future career.
