Whenever the issue of Kashmir is mentioned, the name of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee definitely comes up. He was among those who first demanded the removal of Article 370 from Kashmir. This demand became the reason for his death. Today is his death anniversary.

Talking about personal life, Dr. Mukherjee was born on 6 July 1901 in Bengal. His father Ashutosh Babu was an educationist. He passed his MA examination at the age of 22 and got married in the same year. After this there was a new turn in his life, where at the age of 24, he became a senate member of Kolkata University. Then he went abroad for studies and studied on a prestigious subject.

He also practiced law after post graduation, but his luck was taking him elsewhere. He entered politics in 1939. He did a lot of work towards social reform. In such a situation, when India became independent in 1947, he got a place in the Nehru cabinet as a non-Congress minister. He was given the responsibility of the Finance Ministry in the very first instance.

After independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was merging different princely states, then Shyama Prasad Mukherjee supported him. Also played an important role in the merger of Hyderabad.

Resigned for Kashmir
Mukherjee was opposing Article 370 from the very beginning. When the Nehru government did not accept his demands regarding Kashmir, he resigned from the ministerial post. After this he accused Pandit Nehru of appeasement. Mukherjee had clearly said at that time that two symbols, two legislations and two heads would not work in one country.

After his resignation, he opened a front against the Kashmir policies of the Nehru government. He was traveling to Srinagar, when he was arrested on 11 May 1953. He was kept in the Srinagar Central Jail for a few days, after which he was transferred to a cottage outside the city.

Cause of death mysterious
The events that followed are quite mysterious. It is claimed that after the transfer to the cottage, his health deteriorated. He got pleuritis on the night of 19-20 June. This is a kind of disease from which he was already suffering. For the treatment of this disease, Kashmir’s doctor Ali Mohammad gave him an injection of streptomycin.

He got rest that day, but on 22nd June his health deteriorated again. He had difficulty in breathing. The people present there took him to the hospital. He was declared dead on 23 June 1953 at 3.40 am. The cause of his death was given to heart attack.

According to Dr. Mukherjee’s family doctor, streptomycin injection did not suit him. Still Dr. Ali gave it to him. There were several demands for an inquiry into his death, but the Nehru government rejected it. The government said that Mukherjee’s death was a natural death.
