present the budget There are only a few days left for this to happen. This time, due to general elections, an interim budget will be presented. However, despite this, everyone from common to special has a lot of expectations from the budget. Now senior citizens have demanded more inclusive measures, from including all elders in the Ayushman Bharat scheme to online counseling services. Ahead of the budget, HelpAge India and AgeWell Foundation demanded a more inclusive budget that takes into account the welfare of the elderly. This includes monthly nutri kits for elders from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, dedicated health care facilities at the local level and online counseling services to address various issues faced by the elders.

There is a need to further expand the scope of PMJAY

Anupama Dutta from HelpAge India highlighted the progress made in schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) and National Program for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) but stressed the need for them to be more inclusive. “The government may consider expanding the ambit of PMJAY to all senior citizens, especially women, extremely old people and the disabled, except income tax payers,” Dutta said. Also advocated expansion of the National Program for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) to focus on inpatient treatment. Apart from this, Dutta said, “Women, especially the elderly women, take care of the household work and take most of everyone’s care there. For them, carer allowance will ensure dignity, independence and self-satisfaction.

Hope to make NPS attractive

Economists say that amid the demand to implement the old pension scheme in the budget, along with making NPS (New Pension System) attractive, some separate tax exemption is expected for women. Besides, there is also a possibility of giving some relief to the employed and middle class by increasing the amount of standard deduction in the election year. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the interim budget for 2024-25 in Parliament on February 1. It is noteworthy that the old pension system has been implemented in some states including Punjab and Rajasthan. In view of this, other states and central employees are also demanding implementation of old pension. In view of this, the government had formed a committee in April last year under the chairmanship of Finance Secretary TV Somanathan to review and improve the National Pension System (NPS). The committee will probably submit its report at the end of this month.
