New Delhi: The Indian Cricket Board has formally invited applications for the chairmanship of the National Selection Committee. The decision comes just four months after the BCCI asked Chetan Sharma to resign as the chairman of the national selection committee for leaking confidential information. The last date for submission of applications is June 30 and the new member of the selection committee is expected to be part of the panel that will pick the team for the Ireland series. Before that, it is likely to see the Deodhar Trophy inter-zonal competition. The eligibility criteria for the post is the same as before. The applicant must have played seven Tests or 10 One Day Internationals or at least 30 first-class matches while at least five years have passed since his retirement from active cricket. The selection committee that included Chetan was sacked after a dismal performance in the T20 World Cup but when the new committee was formed in December last year, he reapplied and was re-elected.

However, after the sting operation, he was asked to resign as most of the Indian team members did not want to talk to him. A senior BCCI official said on condition of anonymity, “Technically, Chetan can apply if he wants as he had resigned. Of course, whether he will apply or not is a big issue. But the rules don’t stop them from applying once again.

Lucknow Super Giants mentor Gautam Gambhir (retired in December 2018), Yuvraj Singh (retired in July 2019) and cricketer-turned-commentator Harbhajan Singh (retired in 2022) are some big names from the North Zone but they are not technically eligible Because by the date of application five years of his retirement will not be completed. The only big name who is eligible is Virender Sehwag.

However, it is a well-known fact that Sehwag is an analyst on various platforms and earns a good amount of money from promotional activities and would not be interested in this job if he gets a salary of Rs 1 crore. The rest of the panel members get Rs 90 lakh.

Another source said, “It is not set in stone that with Chetan taking over, the BCCI needs a chairman from the north zone. They can bring in someone like Vivek Razdan, Ajay Ratra, Ritinder Singh Sodhi or Atul Wassan and retain SS Das (23 Tests) as the new chairman.
