Kalaburagi (Karnataka):
After repeated allegations of illegal mining around the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam in Karnataka, state Mines and Geology Minister Murugesh R. Nirani on Saturday said that the Lok Sabha MP from Mandya, Sumalatha Ambareesh, should produce valid documents to prove her allegations of illegal mining in the areas around the dam.

In Kalaburagi, Chief Minister B.S. Nirani told reporters on the sidelines of his meeting with Yediyurappa that he had accepted that illegal mining activity was carried out at Baby Betta (hill) in Pandavapura taluk of Mandya district, but it is not done now.

He said, the hill is 10 km away from the iconic dam. But after taking over as minister I personally inspected the area four months back and directed the concerned authorities to stop all illegal mining activities immediately. The Mines and Geology Department of Mandya District took over. Tough decisions were taken to stop these activities. No illegal mining or quarrying activity has been observed since then.

The minister said that if the Mandya MP (Sumalatha) or anyone else feels that any illegal activity is going on in the area, they should come forward with valid evidence to prove the allegations.

These allegations are not only sensitive but also create panic among lakhs of people in the state as well as in the neighboring state, he said.

Responding to a question, Nirani said the state government would certainly initiate an impartial probe into the allegations, provided someone came forward with sufficient evidence.

There is no vested interest here, he said. All elected representatives should work together to fight such illegal mining or any other illegal activity in the most effective manner.

He said that mining activity was going on in this area for the last seven decades, but after coming to power in the state BJP has taken strict action in this matter.

“We are in the process of banning mining activities around 20 kms from the current 10 kms of KRS dam,” he said. We are discussing the matter with legal and irrigation experts.

Nirani’s statements came after the Mandya MP alleged over the past one week that illegal mining was going on in the area around the KRS dam.

This HD The tussle turned into a tussle between JD(S) leaders including Kumaraswamy and Sumalatha.

KRS Dam is one of the oldest structures in the state. It is a gravity dam made of Surkhi mortar below the confluence of the Kaveri River with its tributaries Hemavati and Lakshmana Teertha in Mandya district.
