I am still hopeful that my daughter will come back, said the mother of one of the two tribal women who were allegedly gang-raped and killed on May 4, 2023, in Manipur’s Kangpokpi area.
Two tribal women, aged 21 and 24, who worked at a car wash in Kangpokpi area of Manipur, died after being gang-raped. This incident happened on the same day when two Kuki women were paraded naked in the same area. On 3 May, ethnic violence clashes broke out in Manipur.
Two tribal women from the same village in Manipur used to work in a car wash shop in Imphal. He was allegedly abducted, gangraped and murdered by a mob on 4 May.
Following the incident, the mother of one of the victims lodged a complaint at Saikul police station on 5 May, but the police registered an FIR on 16 May. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, however, said that there was only one case of rape in over 6,000 FIRs registered across the state.
According to India Today, the mother of one of the victims told TOI that before the violent clash, her daughter used to work at a car wash to help support her siblings. She lived in a rented house with another woman from the same village. A day after the clashes broke out in Manipur, the victim’s mother could not contact her daughter.
Mother said- A woman asked- Do you want daughter alive or dead…
The victim’s mother said, “When the violence started, I got worried, so I kept calling my daughter repeatedly. However, she did not pick up the phone. Later, a Meitei woman picked up the phone and asked me ‘do I want to see my daughter alive or dead.’ Saying this, he again disconnected the phone.
“After that we came to know that both have been murdered. When asked how she came to know about what had happened to her daughter before her death, the victim’s mother said that she did not know the details till later.
The victim’s mother said- ‘No information was received from the police’
When asked about the action taken after the case was registered in connection with the incident, the victim’s mother said, “We have not received any information about the case from the police or any other authority.”
According to the FIR, the miscreants, allegedly members of various organisations, including the Meitei Yuva Sangathan, were booked under different sections of the IPC, including 302 (murder), 375 (rape), and 366 (kidnapping).
‘Our village was attacked, burnt’
The victim’s mother said that when she got the news of her daughter’s death, her village was attacked and burnt. His family had to flee to the forest and then live in a relief camp.
