President Joe Biden’s administration in the US on Tuesday announced a ban on Russian officials and businesses for a deadly attack on Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny and later jailing him.
Senior officials of the Biden administration did not reveal the immediate identity of the officers who have been banned. The Biden administration also announced restrictions on 14 trade and other enterprises under the US Chemical and Biological Arms Control and War Elimination Act. Most of these organic chemicals make poisons.
The senior official said the US intelligence community concluded that Russia’s federal security service used a Russian nerve agent (a kind of poison) ‘Novichok’ on dissidents in August last year.
Sanctions have been imposed on Russia for the first time by the Biden administration. The administration has pledged to confront Russian President Vladimir Putin for alleged attacks on opposition leaders in Russia and hacking of US agencies and businesses.
The Biden administration coordinated sanctions with the European Union. The EU has already banned some Russian officials in the Navalny case. The EU announced new sanctions on Tuesday, targeting Russia’s top officials for sending Navalny to prison.
Navalny Russia’s nerve agents fell ill in the attack. The US and others linked the attack to Putin’s security service. Navalny arrived in Russia in January after months of treatment in Germany where he was arrested in Moscow for violating parole.
