The telecom secretary said that the auction of 2,250 MHz spectrum began on Monday. Its reserve price was around four lakh crore rupees. The auction saw bids in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz and 2300 MHz bands. But no bids were found in the 700 and 2500 MHz.
The Secretary informed that Vodafone-Idea bought spectrum worth Rs 1,993.40 crore in this auction. The company said that the spectrum it has bought in the auction in five circles will help in increasing 4G coverage and capacity. The company said that this would enable it to provide a ‘great digital experience’ to its customers.
Bharti Airtel said that it has acquired radio waves worth Rs 18,699 crore. The company said that this would give it success in offering 5G services in the future. The company said that now it has got spectrum in the GHz sub-region across the country, so that the company will now be able to give good coverage in indoors and buildings in cities.
Of the total spectrum, 700 MHz band accounted for one-third of the spectrum. This spectrum was not sold at the 2016 auction. Analysts said other spectrum below the GHz band is available at a lower price. So most operators do not want to invest in new spectrum, as they will have to spend extra on equipment.
