After the year 2015, the department of telecom has once again started the process of auctioning telecom spectrum of about Rs 3.92 lakh crore. For this auction, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have made a total of Ernest Money Deposit (EMD) of Rs 13,475 crore.

Among all these companies, Reliance Jio has the highest deposit of Rs 1000 crore of Ernest Money deposit, while Bharti Airtel has given EMD of Rs 3,000 crore and Vodafone Idea has given EMD of Rs 475 crore.

Let us know that on December 17, 2020, the Union Cabinet had approved the auction of 2,251.25 MHz spectrum worth Rs 3.92 lakh crore in seven frequency band. In this round, the auction was approved at the base price suggested by TRAI in 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz. The government, however, kept the 3300-3600 MHz band out of the auction this time. The industry has been describing this frequency as suitable for 5G services. This band was also included in TRAI’s suggestions.

5G spectrum auction later
The 3,300-3,600 Mhz band required for 5G services is not being auctioned. However, companies had hoped that this auction would also be approved.

Payment facility in EMI
The successful bid company can either pay in one lump sum or in fixed pieces of 25 to 50 per cent. The remaining amount can be paid in 16 EMIs in a two-year moratorium.
