India won the Melbourne Test and kept themselves in the running to play in the next year’s final of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) World Test Championship (WTC). According to the release released on Wednesday, India is in second place in the points table.

India scored 30 points with an eight-wicket victory in Melbourne. The team retained second place with 72.2 percentage points from 390 points. Despite losing in the Boxing Day Test against India and fines for slow over rate, Australia are on top. The team has 76.6 percentage points from 322 points.

New Zealand have strengthened their position to third place with a 101-run win over Pakistan in the first Test on Wednesday. The team got 60 points from this win and got 66.7 percentage points.

The ICC tweeted on Wednesday, “New Zealand has kept itself in the running for the final of the ICC World Test Championship.” England and Pakistan are in the top five in the World Test Championship table. After the end of the league stage, the two top-ranked teams will play in the finals based on percentage points.

Each series of the league is of 120 points. Based on this, the same points are distributed for each match of the series. These range from 60 for each match in a series of two Tests to 24 for each match in a Test series of five matches.

India is at the top on points basis but the ICC revised the points system last month following an interruption in the international cricket season due to the Corona epidemic. Now the top two teams will be decided on the basis of percentage points.
