Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar believes Ajinkya Rahane’s century in the ongoing Boxing Day Test after India’s embarrassing defeat in the first Test in Adelaide will be counted among the most important innings in the country’s cricket history.

The Indian team collapsed for 36 in the second innings of the first Test at Adelaide Oval, their lowest score in Test history. Australia then won the first Test by eight wickets. The visiting team, however, made a strong comeback in the ongoing second Test here and are progressing towards the series at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Rahane hit a century for India while the bowlers performed brilliantly.

This century is one of the most important centuries in the history of Indian cricket.
“I believe that this century will be one of the most important centuries in the history of Indian cricket,” Gavaskar told the Seven Network. A 112-run stand by caretaker captain Rahane helped India take a 131-run lead against Australia on a first-innings basis and the hosts’ score was 133 for six in the second innings until the third day’s play ended on Monday. He strengthened his position considerably.

India will not kneel despite an embarrassing defeat
Gavaskar said that this innings sent a message to the home team that India would not kneel despite a humiliating defeat in the first match of the series. Former India captain Gavaskar said, “Important innings because it showed the spirit, by making such a comeback, the message was sent to the opposing team that despite being reduced to 36 in the last match, this Indian team will not be able to kneel.”

He said, “This is the message and that is why I think it will be one of the most important centuries in the history of Indian cricket.”
