A Mumbai magistrate court remanded Partho Das Gupta, a former executive officer (CEO) of ratings agency ‘Broadcast Audience Research Council’ (BARC), in police custody till Friday, 28 December, in the alleged scam of Television Rating Point (TRP).

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch arrested 55-year-old Dasgupta in Pune district while he was traveling from Goa to Pune. He was produced before a Mumbai court on Friday. Police sought his remand for investigation, saying he needed to be detained and questioned to understand his role in the scam.

Dasgupta’s lawyer Kamlesh Ghumre argued that cases of cheating and criminal treachery have been filed against him, which are not made against him. After hearing the arguments of both sides, the court remanded the accused to the custody of the crime branch till 28 December. Dasgupta is the 15th person accused in some TV channels for molesting TRPs. Most of the accused in the case are on bail.

Romil Ramgarhia gets bail
Police said that interrogation of BARC’s former Chief Operating Officer Romil Ramgarhia revealed that he was involved in fraudulent television rating points (TRPs) in collusion with Dasgupta. Ramgarhia has already been arrested. The court on Thursday granted bail to another accused Bark’s former Chief Operating Officer (COO) Ramil Ramgarhia in the case. Dasgupta was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BARC from June 2013 to November 2019.

Republic described the police charge as ridiculous
The media network issued a statement earlier in the day saying that the police allegations are ridiculous and the sole purpose of the investigation is to target Republic TV. Republic Media Network dismissed all allegations, claiming that the investigation was fake and that its sole purpose was to target Republic TV.

What is the matter
TRPs are measured by detecting viewership in some households, and viewership figures attract advertisers. There have been allegations that some of these houses were bribed to go to certain channels to increase their TRP.
