Kabul police chief spokesman Firdaus Faramarz said the unidentified gunmen shot and killed Yusuf Rashid, the executive director of the non-governmental ‘Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan’ (FEFA). He said that Rashid was killed when he left for FEFA’s office. His driver was also injured in this attack, who died while undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and US acting ambassador and several social media users condemned the attack on Rashid. Ghani said in a statement that Rashid spent years trying to institutionalize democracy and bring transparency in the election process. He said, “The enemy cannot overtake the current Afghanistan by carrying out such attacks which have made recent progress and achievements by the tireless efforts and sacrifices of the people.”
US diplomat Ross Wilson in Afghanistan tweeted that Rashid was a dedicated and steadfast advocate of representative democracy in the country. He said, “He worked tirelessly for years to ensure free and transparent elections in which all Afghans participate.” His death is the loss of family, friends and the nation. “
In a separate incident on Wednesday, a police vehicle was targeted in the eastern area of Kabul in which a police officer was killed and two others were injured, Faramarge said. No organization has taken responsibility for these attacks immediately. It is noteworthy that on Tuesday, the Islamic State took the responsibility for the road bombing in Kabul, in which a vehicle hit and five people were killed.
