Sources said that the leadership is considering various options on organizational elections, but Rahul Gandhi has still not indicated to the party leaders whether he will contest for the post of president. Significantly, Rahul resigned from the post of Speaker after the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections and after this Sonia Gandhi became the Interim President of the Congress.
A close party leader said that there is every possibility that if Rahul Gandhi is reluctant to contest for the post of president, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra could be a possible candidate. Apart from the Gandhi family, senior Congress leaders may also be ready for candidature. If this happens, then the election for the post of Congress President may be interesting. However, some in the party feel that this will be adversely affected.
The AICC official and a close aide of Rahul said, “The only option for the Congress will be to stabilize the party and then look forward to some kind of reconstruction, so that a member of the Gandhi family is prepared to take over.”
Chances are that elections for the post of Congress president will be held after the upcoming elections in major states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam. The Congress is the main rival in Assam challenging the ruling BJP while in Tamil Nadu it is an opposition alliance with the DMK.
At the same time, the Congress can join hands with the Left parties in West Bengal, where the ruling TMC and BJP are likely to be the main contenders to form the government in the state. The elections in West Bengal have also become important because the BJP has committed itself to winning the state for the first time. In view of this, the challenge has increased for the Congress.
