The Union Cabinet has approved the next round of spectrum auction. Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar gave this information on Wednesday. He said that the cabinet has approved relief for sugarcane farmers, improvement in power infrastructure facilities in northeast states and spectrum auction.
The Digital Auction Commission, the decision-making body of the Department of Telecommunications, approved the spectrum auction scheme in May. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that a notice will be issued this month to invite applications for auction of spectrum and it is proposed to be auctioned by March 2021.
The DoT has to issue a notification for the next round of auctions. Under this, radio waves worth Rs 5.22 lakh crore will be sold. Telecom company Reliance Jio says that spectrum worth Rs 3.92 lakh crore is lying for auction without any use.
The telecom ministry gets an average of five per cent of revenue from telecom operators in the form of spectrum usage charges. It is assessed on the basis of spectrum available with companies. At the same time, out of the proceeds from the sale of communication services, license fee is eight per cent.
