Several people gathered near a vacant government plot in Mumbai’s Vikhroli area after rumors of giving free land to the poor. Officials gave this information on Monday. Officials said that the municipal authorities and the police removed them from there but they are still waiting around to get free land.

More than 500 people, including women and children from the city and adjoining Thane and Navi Mumbai, have been gathering on a government plot spread over several acres on JVLR Link Road in Tagore Nagar, Vikhroli for the last 20 days. An official of Vikhroli police station said that these people also started making 300-400 square feet plots for themselves with bamboo, cloth and other materials.

The official said that rumor had spread that the government was giving free land. There was also a rumor that the daughter of a rich person was giving free land to the poor in memory of her father who passed away recently. In the last 20 days, the BMC has evacuated people thrice but they are not ready to go and have gathered on the road lying on the ground.

He said that but when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), police and local administration officials came to know about this, they went there and they removed these people and their belongings on Saturday and Sunday. He said that the police even brought some of them to the police station and warned them but they are still not listening.

According to the officer, Vikhroli police has not received any complaint from BMC, DM or Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority. Therefore, no case has been registered against anyone.
