Discussion continues in the political corridors regarding the upcoming book of former late President Pranab Mukherjee News. There is also concern in the Congress party from the discussion about this book. Senior Congress leaders said that it is not right to comment without fully reading the new book of the past. The book offers a critical view of the party. Former Union Minister M. Veerappa Moily said that the book has not been released yet and one has to understand in what perspective Mukherjee has written these things.

Moily was part of the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh. The former Karnataka chief minister said, ‘I don’t want to comment on this until I read the book completely.’ Publisher ‘Roopa Books’ announced on Friday that ‘The Presidential Years’ will be released globally in January 2021. The former president has presented critical views about the Congress in the book, in which he has been a senior leader for more than five decades.

Mukherjee has strongly refuted the views of party leaders that if he had become prime minister in 2004, the party would have avoided defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. In an excerpt from the book released by Rupa, he wrote, ‘I do not accept this idea, I believe that the party leadership lost political focus after I became President. While Sonia Gandhi failed to look into party matters, Dr. Singh lost personal contact with other MPs due to his long absence from the House.

Pranab wrote his book- Sonia and Manmohan responsible for Congress defeat in 2014

According to the publisher, this book describes his journey as the first citizen of India in Rashtrapati Bhavan in a remote village in Bengal, from lighting up the lamp. Former Union Minister Salman Khurshid also said that the book needs to be read thoroughly before commenting. Khurshid said, “If someone with such a vast experience writes something, then there is a need to read fully in what perspective it is written.”

Excerpts from Pranab’s book

‘If I had become the Prime Minister, the Congress would not have done this in 2014’
In this book, Mukherjee writes, “Some party members believed that if he had become the Prime Minister in 2004, the Congress would not have lost a position in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.” However, I do not agree with this opinion. I maintain that the party leadership lost political direction after I became President. If Sonia Gandhi was unable to handle the affairs of the party, then Manmohan Singh’s long absence from the House put an end to any personal contact with MPs. ‘

‘Prime Minister Manmohan Singh busy in saving coalition’
The former president said, ‘I believe that the moral right to rule lies with the Prime Minister. The entire governance system of the country is a reflection of the functioning of the Prime Minister and his administration. Dr. Singh was busy protecting the coalition which had an impact on governance, while Narendra Modi in his first term seemed to be adopting a totalitarian style of governance which was reflected through the strong relations between the government, legislature and judiciary.
