The Bharatiya Janata Party has performed well in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections and its number of seats has jumped from four to 48. BJP is now in the second position in the municipal corporation. It almost destroyed the Congress in the elections and the number of Congress seats has been reduced to two.
The BJP has never seen a force like this in the municipal elections. The party has a lot at stake here. BJP President JP Nadda himself went to campaign in Hyderabad. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Home Minister Amit Shah also came to campaign and the BJP benefited tremendously.
Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao’s party Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) may be the first to win 56 seats, but it is clear from the election results that the BJP has infiltrated the TRS stronghold. The election results are the biggest danger bell for the TRS. In the last election, the TRS won 99 out of 150 seats. But this time TRS lost 43 seats. The result is a clear message to the TRS that the party’s base is crumbling.
KCR’s politics will have a direct impact on increasing BJP’s strength. In the 2023 Telangana assembly elections, the BJP will contest with more power. The emergence of the BJP in Hyderabad and the weakening of the TRS will affect the entire Telangana. These results are indicative that Telangana politics may change. After Karnataka, the second door of entry in South India has opened for the BJP in Telangana. The BJP has strengthened its base in Telangana and is now eyeing the next assembly elections.
Five years ago, BJP was the number five party in the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections, but now it has left the Congress far behind and has become the number two party. It is a big thing for BJP to win so many seats in Hyderabad. This is a clear indication of the wave of change going on in the state.
In this election, Owaisi’s party All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won 44 seats, contesting 51 seats. Now Owaisi can claim that he is the biggest leader of Muslims. His party contested in those areas where there are more Muslim voters. Owaisi’s party has won most of the seats in its stronghold Old Hyderabad. On the other hand, for TRS Chief Chandrashekhar Rao, these results may prove to be alarm bells. He will somehow make his mayor in Hyderabad, but now the fear of BJP will haunt him everyday.
Congress has become the worst state. Congress contested 150 seats but won only 2 seats. The interesting thing is that the Congress cannot even say that the EVM was disturbed. Because the elections were held here, not from EVMs, but from ballot papers.
Four clear signs have emerged from this election result. One, BJP has got good results of its experiment in this state of South India. The enthusiasm of BJP leaders and workers has increased and this is a new beginning for BJP in South India. Second, the BJP fielded its national leaders for campaigning in the municipal corporation elections for the first time and contested with a clear strategy and it was successful. Third, the Hyderabad results have opened a second door for the BJP in South India. On one side is Bengaluru where BJP’s feet are already frozen, while the other door is now open in Hyderabad. Fourth, the BJP’s graph in Telangana has increased rapidly.
It will be very difficult for KCR to stop the pace that BJP has gained in Telangana since 2018. The BJP’s vote share was just 7 percent in the 2018 Telangana assembly elections, but a few months later, the BJP’s vote share in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections rose to 20 percent. From that time till today BJP has continuously increased its strength.
A message of the results of the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election is hidden in the results of Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM. This election was also very important for Owaisi as he was being tested in his own house. Owaisi contested this election with a rigorous strategy and fielded candidates for just 51 seats in the 150-ward Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
Owaisi put his strength in those seats where Muslim voters are more. This strategy of Owaisi benefited tremendously from AIMIM. Owaisi contested 51 seats and won 44 seats. Seeing the strike rate of Owaisi’s party, it remained close to 84 percent. If Owaisi’s strength in Hyderabad had diminished, it would have been difficult for him to go out and contest elections. Owaisi, who is planning to field candidates in Muslim-majority seats in West Bengal, would have got a break too. They can now focus on Bengal where a large section of Muslim voters support Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress.
The results of the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election are such that the three parties – TRS, BJP and AIMIM are calling it their victory. BJP says that our seats have increased from 4 to 48 and the vote has increased from two and a half per cent to 26 per cent, this is a BJP victory. Owaisi is saying that look at our strike rate, we contested 51 seats and won 44 seats. What could be a bigger win than this? The TRS won 57 seats, while the last time it had 99 seats, it is also being celebrated here as it is the largest party. TRS says that we have stopped BJP from making Mayor, this is our victory.
In this election, if there is any party that can neither claim victory nor celebrate, it is the Congress. The Congress has won two municipal corporation seats with great difficulty. After the results came out, the state unit president of the party resigned and the central leadership is speechless. Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election results mean that till now Congress used to challenge TRS in Telangana but now BJP has become a challenger. (Rajat Sharma)
