Sharma, a former director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), was appointed as the administrator of Lakshadweep in October 2019. Prior to this, he was the Center’s interlocutor for Jammu and Kashmir. He was appointed as the representative of the Government of India on 30 May 2017 for peace talks with various organizations in the northeastern states.
He was appointed director of IB in December 2014 for a two-year term. Sharma was a 1976 batch IPS officer and affiliated to the Kerala cadre. President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have expressed condolences on Sharma’s death. Kovind said in the tweet, “The demise of Lakshadweep Administrator Shri Dineshwar Sharma is shocking. He was an excellent police officer. He was an expert on internal security matters. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. ”
