A press conference was held on Thursday by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. In this, Ministry spokesperson Anurag Shrivastava shared information related to various issues including Kulbhushan Jadhav in Pakistan jail, issues related to Brahmaputra river with China, guest on Republic Day.

Srivastava said, Pakistan is trying to link Kulbhushan Jadhav’s case with another case. In general consular practice, Shahnawaz Noon was chosen to appear on behalf of our High Commission in the case of the release of an Indian prisoner, Mohammed Ismail.

“During the proceedings in Ismail’s case, the Pakistani Attorney General raised the matter related to Jadhav, although these two cases are not related to each other,” he said. We have come to know that the statements made by Noon in our CTA loser were not correct and were contrary to our side in this matter.

“It seems that Noon did this under pressure from Pakistani authorities while it was outside his jurisdiction,” the spokesperson said. Srivastava stated that Noon was told earlier that he had no authority to represent the Government of India or Jadhav.

China’s antics in Brahmaputra river
Srivastava said that the government is monitoring activities in the Brahmaputra. He said that with the rights of the established user of water being a low-lying coastal area, we are constantly putting our things before China. We have appealed to China to first ensure that the activities on the higher reaches do not affect the low-lying areas.

The ministry said that China has informed us that it is only working on river hydropower projects, which does not include diversion of Brahmaputra water. We have discussed many issues with China regarding transborder rivers. Along with diplomatic channels, we have discussed issues related to transborder rivers from China under the expert level mechanism established in 2006. To protect our interests, we will continue to be in dialogue with China even further.

Always opposed Pakistan’s illegal activities
Along with this, Srivastava said that we have seen in the media the news of the completion of the agreement related to Azad Port Hydropower Project in Pak Occupied Kashmir. We have always opposed the changes being made by Pakistan through its illegal and forced activities in Indian territories.

The status of the chief guest of Republic Day is not clear yet
Regarding the chief guest on Republic Day, Srivastava said that the announcement related to the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations will be announced around the program. So whenever there is going to be something to share in this regard, we will gladly share it. Let us tell you that discussions are going on that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson may come as the chief guest at the Republic Day event.
