The passage of this bill has cleared the way for the High-Skilled Immigrant Act. This is a big relief for Indian professionals coming to the US on H-1B visas. These professionals have been waiting for a green card to become a permanent resident of the US for decades.
The original bill was passed by the US House of Representatives on 10 July 2019. It was sponsored by Republican Senator Mike Lee from Utah in the Senate. Passing this bill would increase the limit on family based migrant visas.
Currently, 15 percent of the total visas are issued to any country. 7% of these visas are issued on a family basis. Apart from this, this bill will also remove the 7 percent limit on visas given on employment basis.
Green card backlog of Indians over 195 years
Senator Mike Lee informed the Senate in July that the backlog of any Indian citizen to get a green card is over 195 years. That is, he has to wait more than his age. Let us know that in FY 2019, Indian citizens received only 9,008 Category 1 (EB1), 2908 Category 2 (EB2), and 5,083 Category 3 (EB3) Green Cards. (EB3) There are various categories of employment-based green cards.
Equal opportunities for skilled immigrants
Senator Kevin Kramer stated that the ‘Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act’ creates a more merit-based system that provides equal opportunities to skilled immigrants. Kramer worked to ensure that the bill would prevent fraud and abuse of the visa system.
