After winning five seats in the Bihar Assembly elections, it is being said that AIMIM has emerged as a national level party of Muslims. Its president Asaduddin Owaisi has emerged as the biggest leader of the Muslim community. Before the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, hardly anyone could tell that Indian Muslims have any national level leader. People who used to question that there is a lack of leadership among Indian Muslims, but now AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi is seen as the only leader of Indian Muslims.
History of AIMIM from 1927 to 1957
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM), a root of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, founded in Hyderabad State, British India in 1927, is a recognized political party in the state of Telangana. The head office of AIMIM is located in the old city of Hyderabad. The party is headed by Asaduddin Owaisi and currently has two MPs and seven MLAs. The history of this party can be divided into two parts. The first part was from the founding of Nawab Mahmud Nawaz Khan in 1928 until 1948 when this organization advocated maintaining Hyderabad a separate Muslim state. The founding members of this organization included Syed Qasim Rizvi, a politician from Hyderabad who was also the leader of the armed violent organization Razakar. These Razakars played an important role in raising MIM. It was banned by the Indian government after the merger of Hyderabad State with India in 1948.
History of AIMIM from 1957 to 2020
The second part of the history of AIMIM began after the restoration of this party in 1957 when “All India” was added to the name Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and the party changed its constitution. Qasim Rajvi, who was the president of the Majlis at the time of the Indian government’s action against the state of Hyderabad, was arrested. After being released from the police, he handed over the reins of his party to a famous lawyer of the time, Abdul Wahad Owaisi, before leaving for Pakistan. Since then, this party has been in the hands of this Owaisi family. After Abdul Wahed, Salahuddin Owaisi became its president and now his son Asaduddin Owaisi is the party’s president and MP while his younger brother Akbaruddin Owaisi is the party’s leader in the Legislative Assembly. The family and party leaders have been accused of promoting communal tension in Hyderabad with their inflammatory speeches. But on the other hand, supporters of this party see him as a force to answer to BJP and other Hindu organizations. Along with political power, the Owaisi family also owns a medical and engineering college, several other colleges and two hospitals.
Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad opened front against leadership
After the defeat in Bihar Legislative Assembly elections 2020, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the Congress leaders are completely cut off from the common people and the party has adopted a five-star culture. Ghulam Nabi Azad said that there is a need for an immediate change in the party structure by holding elections from the block to the district and state level. He also said that Congress leaders should give up the five-star culture, at least during elections. Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was among the 23 leaders who wrote letters for organizational change, said that he was raising issues as a reformist and not as a rebel through his talks. He said that we are not against the leadership, rather, we want to strengthen the hands of the leadership by proposing reforms. So, this statement of Ghulam Nabi Azad, who opened a front against the Congress leadership, is not an attempt to turn the Muslims of India towards Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM.
The blood stains of Muslims are on the feet of Congress: Salman Khurshid
During an event organized at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 2018, Congress leader and former Law Minister Salman Khurshid said that his party and his clan have got blood stains from Muslims. Salman Khurshid gave this statement on the question about the Babri demolition and anti-Muslim riots during Congress rule. According to the information, Salman Khurshid also said that there are blood stains in our hands and that is why you are telling us this. However, later, while clarifying, he had called this statement a personal statement.
AIMIM MLA objectes to the word ‘Hindustan’ in Bihar Legislative Assembly
As soon as the name of AIMIM MLA Akhtarul Iman was called for the oath of membership in the 17th Bihar Legislative Assembly, he stood up and objected to the word Hindustan. Actually Akhtarul Iman was supposed to take oath in Urdu language but objecting to the use of the word Hindustan instead of India in Urdu, he requested the Protem Speaker to use the word Bharat. There was an uproar inside and outside the house. However, while taking oath of membership, AIMIM MLA Akhtarul Iman, who objected to the word ‘Hindustan’, changed his tone as soon as he walked out of the house. Akhtarul Iman has said in front of the media outside the House that he did not object to the word Hindustan, but said so much that when the word ‘Constitution of India’ is used in all languages, then the same should be done in Urdu. Akhtarul Iman said that when the people of India and the Constitution of India are being spoken in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, then it is more appropriate to speak India in such a situation.
AIMIM’s eye on West Bengal after Bihar
Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM is now working on a strategy to contest elections in West Bengal too after winning five seats in the Bihar Assembly elections. AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi has said that his party will fight for justice in the northern state of Seemanchal region. Explain that Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM was part of the ‘Grand Democratic Secular Front’ (GDA) in Bihar elections. Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Samata Party and Bahujan Samaj Party were also included in this alliance. Owaisi’s party contested 20 seats in Bihar, winning five of them. According to Election Commission data, there were over 40 million voting in Bihar in 2020 and of these 1.24 percent votes have been received by AIMIM. Prior to this, the party’s performance in the Bihar assembly elections 2015 was poor and it could get only 0.5 per cent of the votes. Amarul Huda won from Kishanganj in the 2019 Bihar Legislative Assembly by-election. In the 2020 election five AIMIM MLAs from Amour, Akhtarul Iman from Jokihat, Shahnawaz Alam from Jokihat, Mohammad Anjar Naeemi from Bahadurganj, Syed Ruknuddin Ahmed from Biasi, Mo from Kochadhaman. Izhar Asfi has reached the assembly by winning. Let us also tell you that the Congress had fielded candidates for 70 seats, but in the Muslim-dominated region, the Congress faced a crushing defeat. So, should we assume that Muslims have lost their attachment to the Congress?
Muslim attitudes towards AIMIM in West Bengal
There is a lot of enthusiasm among the Muslim youth in West Bengal about Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM. Elections are due in Bengal next year, the recent devastation caused by heavy rains in Bengal. But due to lack of relief, there is a lot of anger against the Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee in the Muslim area. The youth living in Muslim areas say that Asaduddin Owaisi wants to work for them with new thinking, so this time he wants to vote for AIMIM. The situation of the Congress in West Bengal is that the people of the Muslim community no longer want to benefit the BJP by voting for the Congress. Muslims of West Bengal say that Trinamool Congress MLAs did nothing for them, so this time they will vote to win Owaisi’s party. According to the source, Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM may get more seats in Bengal than Bihar, which could prove to be a big setback for parties like Trinamool Congress and Congress.
