Law and order and women’s safety are constantly being questioned about the increasing rape cases in the country. On the other hand, Delhi Police has made a shocking disclosure to the Parliamentary Committee on the rape case on Wednesday. The committee was told by the Delhi Police that in 98% of rape cases in the national capital, the victim was a close relative or acquaintance of the accused.

The police has given this information before the Standing Committee on Home Affairs headed by Congress MP Anand Sharma. According to sources, officials of Delhi Police, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Women and Child Development made their remarks before the committee meeting. The agenda of this meeting was to consider the increase in anti-women crimes.

Delhi Police told the committee that in 44% of the total rape cases here, the accused were family members or family friends of the victim, in 13% of the cases the accused were relatives and 12% neighbors. He said that in 26 per cent of the cases, the accused somehow knew the victim in some way and in three per cent of the cases, the accused were either employers or co-workers. In just two per cent of the cases, the accused were found to be unknown persons.

Sources said that in the committee meeting, members suggested that there is a need to increase sensitivity and increase awareness about women.
