Social media giant Twitter has apologized in writing to an important parliamentary panel for misrepresenting Ladakh in China. Panel chairman Meenakshi Lekhi gave this information. Lekhi said that Twitter has sought time till November 30 to rectify the mistake.

Twitter Inc. Chief Privacy Officer Damian Karen has apologized for misrepresenting the map of India by giving an affidavit. Let me tell you that last month, the Parliament’s Joint Committee on Data Protection Bill severely criticized Twitter for showing Ladakh as part of China.

The committee had said that such an act falls under the category of sedition and after this a demand for apology was sought from Twitter. The committee also warned to rectify the mistake as soon as possible.

Now representatives of Twitter India apologized in front of a panel headed by Lekhi, but the panel members warned that it is a criminal act that hurts the sovereignty of the country. Panel members said that an affidavit for the apology should be submitted by Twitter Inc. and not by its ‘marketing arm’ Twitter India.

Following this demand, Twitter Inc. Chief Privacy Officer Damian Karen apologized in an affidavit and asked for time until November 30 to rectify the mistake. Earlier, the ministry had issued a notice after Twitter showed Leh to be part of Jammu and Kashmir instead of Ladakh. Also, there was severe criticism from social media users.
